Yesterday was our yearly fall parade and party. You know, the traditional parade of students wearing their Halloween costumes and walking around for others to see. In our district, we walk around the square (weather-permitting of course). This year, it was pretty chilly. Luckily, we had it the day after Halloween, for the fact we had wind and snow on Halloween, which would have made for a rough parade. I will say there were definitely a lot of creative costumes this year. Now, one of the saddening things for me was the number of students I saw this year who were not participating, whether because they didn't have a costume or because theirs was not appropriate (we have some guidelines regarding costumes, many of which you could probably guess). It was probably the highest number of students I have seen not participate in a year.
After the parade comes the party. In my classroom, each student is put on a "party committee" for each of the 3 parties we have during the year, this way that it's not the same students bringing in everything for every party. I facilitate the committees, but the students for each committee plan the party, the activities, the snacks, etc. I like doing it this way so that it is their party, not mine. For this party, the students decided to play Bingo and enjoy the treats they had brought in. Unfortunately, due to time, they only had around a hour for their party...not much time to do a lot of activities. All in all, the party went well, although the committee did maybe try to rely on me a little more during the party than I would have liked.
What are your thoughts and ideas on parties? Have you had a party with activities that your students really liked? Feel free to leave me a comment with suggestions and ideas!
